eBay chooses Joomla as platform for a 16000+ employee community portal

ebay-logoAs I mentioned a few days ago, there was going to be a big announcement for Joomla today. eBay announced earlier today that the company is going to use Joomla, the world's largest open source content management system (CMS). Joomla will be used for its thousands of employees to share information in its community portal. It might not be as big as it seemed at first, but I believe it's still a really good thing for Joomla.

The "Community Analytics" program will enable eBay's 16,400 employees to source and analyze massive amounts of data to power ideas and learning across the company.

In exchange, eBay will contribute its experiences by becoming part of the Joomla open source community

The announcement was made during the first day of Joomla Day West 2010 in San José, California.

Collaboration using Joomla

VP of eBay

Known as “community analytics,” the initiative will be accessible by eBay’s 16,400 employees, and will incorporate social aspects of active collaboration, including content creation, sharing and open discussion. Joomla CMS supports eBay’s expansion of community-oriented knowledge sharing and information discovery.

Bob Page, eBay vice president for the analytics platform, is excited:

eBay has always made it a key priority to encourage employees to collaborate and drive business innovation.

We are working with the open source community to elevate insightful ideas and innovations across our company, from our greatest resources, our employees.

The system is currently being rolled out to employees of eBay worldwide.

eBay will contribute to the Joomla community

eBay San José

With the largest commercial data warehouse in the world, more than 100 times larger than the Library of Congress, eBay requires immense computing capabilities to mine and decipher actionable data. The new community analytics initiative enables employees to source and analyze massive amounts of data to power ideas and learning across the company. eBay will also contribute back to the open-source community.

Ryan Ozimek, president of Open Source Matters, the not-for-profit created to provide organization, legal, and financial support to the Joomla project, says:

eBay is a welcomed addition to the Joomla open source community. With such a large data demand, eBay is pioneering open-source employee-based projects for the enterprise.

eBay told me that it’s early in the relationship. Thus, there are no concrete time lines at this time, but eBay does plan to contribute to the Joomla project.

Why is this good for Joomla?

You might say: Why is this so big? The solution itself might not be too complicated in terms of functionality. And there are sites with lots more users than the 16000+ employees of eBay. The way I see it, the biggest thing about this project for Joomla is the publicity it will give us.

eBay is huge, and people all over the world use it. 16000+ employees of this company will have first-hand experience with Joomla. And prospective users of Joomla will be able to look to eBay for credibility. Now that I can tell my clients eBay uses Joomla, I have another strong selling point for the system and the concept of Open Source.

In the long run, the experience eBay gathers during the process might prove valuable to the future of Joomla. eBay obviously has a vast experience in running a large-scale service, and with developing online systems. It's quite obvious that they will have something to bring to the table.

I'm looking forward to seeing where this is going in the future.
