Easy upgrade
The best way of updating your site from 2.5.x is to use the built-in upgrade function in the administrator.
Go to Extensions -> Extension Manager -> Update. Then, click the "Update" button. If the update doesn't show, click "Find updates". You might also need to press the "Purge cache" button before "Find updates".
I have done this upgrade on several sites now and it is as fast as it is painless.
Please remember to backup your site before upgrading.
If you are on older versions (ie 1.6 or 1.7), you should upgrade to Joomla 2.5.3 as soon as possible. If you are on 1.6.0, 1.6.1 or 1.6.2, you need to upgrade via FTP to 1.6.3 first. Then you can use the upgrade function in the Joomla administrator to upgrade to 2.5.3.
