The solution is simple: Use Joomla 1.5!
The thing is that Joomla has never been as stable and secure as it is now. It has taken many security patches and bug fixes, but we now have a really stable open source software - completely free of charge.
Waiting for Joomla 1.6 before creating that new site is not productive. Just take a look at the Joomla 1.6 project page, and you'll understand what I mean.
6 reasons why you should not wait for Joomla 1.6
- Uncertainty
No one knows when it will be released. Not even when the beta version will be released. - Instability.
When Joomla 1.6 is released, there will be a lot of patches released before the software is stable enough for a production site. - Incompatibility.
Because Joomla 1.6 has a lot of new functions, your favorite extensions will not work as is. They will need to be updated and tested to utilize the new Joomla 1.6 ACL functions, removed sections, nested categories etc. - Lacking support
The support for new software will obviously not be as extensive as with established software. - Missing documentation
Most likely, the documentation for Joomla 1.6 will not be released at the same time as the software itself. It takes time, and someone has to do it. - Incomplete language support
Most languages will not be ready at the time of the Joomla 1.6 release.
Ask yourself these questions:
- Would you rather have a stable, reliable system with a lot of compatible extensions?
- Or a brand new software with limited compatibility (for a long while) and a future of patches ahead of it? I know my choice is the first one!
Although I would love to have the ACL functionality of Joomla 1.6, I'd rather wait for a stable version.
So, for me there's no reason sitting in a corner waiting for the holy grail - I use what I have at hand: Joomla 1.5. It's powerful!
