Domain names and SEO

Hi Kristoffer, I read your blog and articles about Joomla and now that you are skille in Web and SEO. I have been working with Joomla sites for about three years and are now learning more about how google interprets information on a joomla site.

There are some things I don´t understand and maybe you could help or advise me where to look. If I have a site URL sitename.com and people writes www.sitename.com, how does google analytics interprets that? also if I use the "sitename.index.php" what effect on statistics and indexing would that have on my site?

    Hi Micke,

you should use the Google Webmaster tools to choose your primary domain (ie sitename.com or www.sitename.com).
    For Analytics, it doesn't matter.

If you have sitename.com/index.php and other variants, like sitename.com/index.php?parameter=value, you can end up with duplicate URLs indexed. That is not good.

You can use sh404SEF or a similar SEF component to avoid this. Or an extension that creates canonical meta tags in your pages.

    Good luck!
