Joomla™ Users - Make a Difference!

msf-fundraisingFellow Joomla blogger Brian Teeman has started a fund-raising initiative to raise money for Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders).

I want to join him in his efforts and I hope you as a reader will find that this cause is one (of many) which will help people who find themselves in danger.

Brian has chosen Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), Doctors Without Borders, as they are an international, non-denominational, non-political humanitarian aid organisation that provides emergency medical assistance to populations in danger in more than 80 countries.

The Earthquake victims need your help now!

Now is the time to step up and give your donation. Your contribution has rarely been needed more than just now.

Update January 15th 2010:

On January 12, an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Ruichter scale struck about 15 kilometers southwest of the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams on the ground have seen significant damage to its medical facilities, injuries to patients and staff, and an influx of wounded towards these hospitals in the capital.

Haiti video update: Description of initial needs
Haiti Video Paul McPhun, MSF operations manager, gives a briefing here on the situation for MSF and our patients in Haiti, including damage sustained to MSF medical centres, our medical focus, the types of injuries and traumas we are seeing, further response plans, how medical teams are overwhelmed, having worked all night and concerns over staff and patients unaccounted for.

Makeshift medical facilities treat wounded but transport infrastructure slows essential supplies and staff in Haiti

At least 1,500 patients have been treated so far at MSF locations. Teams are seeing patients pour in. All teams are doing their best in terms of administering first aid, but surgery needs are huge. One major impediment to date has to do with blockages at the airport affecting the ability to move people and freight quickly.

Originally, Brian wrote about his initiative:

As we approach the end of another year it is traditional in many cultures to look back and see what has been achieved in that time and to give thanks.

For many of us it is a time to take stock and to acknowledge that we may be more fortunate than others. One way to do this is to donate money to a charity.

Why don't you join me and other users of Joomla!™ to raise funds "all together" for Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders).

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) are committed to two objectives:

  • Providing medical aid wherever needed, regardless of race, religion, politics or gender
  • Raising awareness of the plight of people they help. MSF has been setting up emergency medical aid missions around the world since 1971.

MSF works in rehabilitation of hospitals and dispensaries, vaccination programmes and water and sanitation projects. MSF also works in remote health care centres, slum areas and provides training of local personnel. All this is done with the objective of rebuilding health structures to acceptable levels.

No matter how much you can afford to donate it will be greatly appreciated by those in need. But whilst deciding how much take a little time perhaps and think of the number of Joomla! web sites you have built this year, the number of extensions or templates you have sold or even the time you have saved by using Joomla!
