mac-video-to-ipad1Just wanted to put up a follow-up on the post 10 things to know about Joomla and the iPad from earlier this week.

If you're a Mac user, you might want to convert video from your Mac and show it on the iPad.

For a limited time you can download a software that does this - completely free!

I thought this was a nice offer, and since many of you readers are Mac users I wanted to give you the opportunity to check it out.

joomla-week-20Here are some interesting Joomla blog posts I found during week 20.

This week, there is a warning about (not) installing Joomla 1.6 beta on your live site, a write-up on the Joomla! Student Outreach Program and a post on how you can join the Joomla 1.6 bug squad, to mention some.

Enjoy the read :)

Unless you've been living under a rock, you've heard about the Apple iPad. The iPhone big brother arrived a few weeks ago, and Apple has sold a huge number of devices already.

The iPad is already a success, and as a device for consuming information it's really great.

So how does this relate to your reality as a Joomla user? In short: You need to make sure that your Joomla website works on the iPad. And not just that it works. It should be a delight surfing your website on the iPad.

Joomla 1.6After a long wait, Joomla! 1.6 beta 1 will be released to the public today. This version arrives almost 7 months after Joomla! 1.6 Alpha 2 was released. It's been a long wait - but as it seems - it is worth it.

This beta version marks a huge step forward in the development of Joomla 1.6. The features in this version are the ones that will be found in the final, stable version.

Joomla 1.6 has been designed to offer enhanced site control and a more polished user experience. It will deliver a variety of new tools to improve website management and access, a more robust organizational structure for content control, and various other user- experience improvements throughout the system.

Enjoy the read!

cloud-access-demo-site2The new Joomla! demo site was launched yesterday! The site leverages a cloud-based solution to give each user a separate installation of the Joomla! CMS for 30 days.

The new demo site allows users to maintain the integrity of their content, and continue to build and learn over an extended trial period. Each demo site user will get a free, complete, dedicated installation of the Joomla! CMS.

With three days of CMSExpo, one could write a book about all that took place at the CMSExpo in Chicago.

But I guess since a blog is a blog and not a book and my reporting expertise is limited at best, I’ll do a little focused reporting.

jandbeyond-logoAs you know, the first international Joomla! conference will take place in Wiesbaden later this month.

2010 sees the launch of the first ever global "Joomla Open Source Creative and Artistic Recognition" awards to be held at the J! and Beyond conference in Wiesbaden, Germany.

Now you have the opportunity to vote for your favorite person or company in a large selection of categories. The winners in each category will be announced during the J!Oscars award ceremony on Monday, May 31st.

tornerAs you may know, all of the extensions listed in the Joomla Extensions Directory (JED) are released under the GPL (Gnu Public License).

In simple terms, this means that anyone may use the code freely. They may also modify it and republish it. However, they have to attribute the original coder for their work. So, you could not take an extension from the JED and republish it without including the original copyright information. This goes for templates and translation files as well.

From time to time, there has been developers who didn't respect this. But, as with most things like this, its eventually discovered. Last year, a developer ripped off a weather plug-in from Rockettheme. There was a lot of commotion in the Joomla community about it, and the culprit had to apologize publicly. The damage was still done. And it takes a lot of time to recover from it.

There are numerous examples of Joomla templates being republished without the proper attribution.

This week - an example of a ripped-off plug-in surfaced in the Joomla community. Or wait... Did it really??

joomla-week-18Here are some interesting Joomla blog posts I found during week 18.

Amongst them are a nice write-up by Louis Landry on the progression of the Joomla 1.6 project, and info on the new Joomla! Community Magazine.

crazyeggCrazyEgg allows you to track your users clicks on a website. This is especially useful when analysing page layouts and the effectiveness of page elements to call a user to an action.

The way crazyegg works is different from Google Analytics and other tracking software. It gives you visual aids to determine the correct placement of elements on a page.

I use Crazyegg to find out where people click, what elements are used by them and if people find particular menu items and links. On this site, I’ve utilized Crazyegg to determine the placement of the large ad and tabs in the right hand column, to mention some.
